Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
The single best "wow" in Fairfax County. Space Shuttle Discovery, an SR-71, hundreds of aircraft — and it's free. Every out-of-town guest should see this once.
George Washington's Mount Vernon
The region's flagship historic attraction. The mansion, the grounds, the Potomac views — it delivers even for people who think they don't care about history.
Great Falls Park
Dramatic Potomac waterfalls and overlooks, 15 minutes from most of Fairfax. The overlooks are an easy walk; the river trails are there if your guests want more.
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts
A national park for the performing arts — the only one. Check the Filene Center schedule (May–September); a concert on the lawn here is a memorable night out.
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
100+ acres of gardens — cherry blossoms in spring, and a well-known winter holiday lights display. Peaceful, photogenic, easy.
Old Town Fairfax
Walkable shops and restaurants plus real history: the Fairfax Museum and Blenheim, a Civil War historic site. Good for a low-key afternoon — pair it with brunch or a brewery stop.
Frying Pan Farm Park
A working farm park that's a hit with kids — animals, wagon rides, and a glimpse of the area's agricultural past. Easy, cheap, fun.
The Workhouse Arts Center
Galleries and artist studios in a converted prison. It's the most interesting stop on this list — good for guests who've "seen the monuments already."
