Illustration of dogs relaxing on a restaurant patio

Fairfax has no shortage of patios, but there's a real difference between a restaurant that tolerates your dog and one that welcomes them. Every spot below has a verified dog-welcome policy — no guessing, no awkward "actually, dogs aren't allowed" after you've sat down.

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar

11963 Fair Oaks Shop Center, Fairfax

The name says it all. The covered patio welcomes pups, and they go further than most — there's an actual dog menu with grilled chicken, rice, and burgers sized for your companion. On a rainy day the covered patio still works.

Dog menu available

Big Buns

10392 Fairfax Blvd, Fairfax (Point 50)

Backyard-style burger joint with a self-described dog-friendly patio. Casual, loud in a good way, and nobody blinks when your dog posts up under the table. Great for a low-key weekend lunch.

Commonwealth Brewing Company

10426 Main St, Old Town Fairfax

Family-run brewery and gastropub with a dog-friendly patio right on Main Street. Good beer, solid food, and a patio scene that feels like a neighborhood gathering. Also serves brunch from 8am.

Hamrock's Restaurant

3950 Chain Bridge Rd, Old Town Fairfax

A Fairfax institution in an 1842 historic house with a wrap-around veranda. Listed as dog-friendly — the veranda is the move on a nice evening. Sunday brunch runs 10–3 if you want to make a morning of it.

Jimmy's Old Town Tavern

697 Spring St, Herndon

Worth the short drive — listed as dog-friendly, famous locally for its wings, and the kind of tavern where regulars (and their dogs) are known by name.

703 Thai Cuisine

11180 Fairfax Blvd, Fairfax

Heated outdoor seating that's described as dog-welcome — a real plus when patio season stretches into the cooler months. Underrated Thai food, too.

Mookie's BBQ — Great Falls

1141 Walker Rd, Great Falls

A bit of a drive, but listed as dog-friendly and BBQ + patio + dog is a hard combination to beat. Pair it with a walk around Great Falls Park.

4251 Campbell Ave, Shirlington

Burgers and a full beer bar with a dog-friendly communal outdoor patio. Easy, unpretentious, good with pups.

Dog-friendly patio right on the water. Hard to beat the view with your dog at your feet.
